As principal songwriter for the roots rock duo, Vox Americana, Jim’s songs won national recognition and critical acclaim. He penned every track on VA’s self-titled debut, and “She Talks Like a Sailor” (The Girlfriend Song) and “When the Heart Says Yes” won Noteworthy awards from American Songwriter Magazine and Billboard International Song Contest. Billboard called the songs “exceptionally strong and commercially appealing”. “She Talks Like a Sailor” also placed as a top ten finalist in the national Best of Country 2001 Songwriter Showcase in Atlanta, GA.
She’s a foul-mouthed femme fatale when she’s cruisin’ the mall
She can cuss a blue streak, start a little barroom brawl
She’s got some four-letter words and they never fail her
I love me a girl that talks like a sailor

In 2004, Jim brought home an Honorable Mention award from the Billboard Song Contest for his folky “Ballad of the Lost and Found”. Comments from Billboard reviewers included “great narrative, excellent lyric”.
Jim contributed seven songs for Captain Quint’s 2006 sophomore release The Swinging Sailor of Perryman. Stone Scruggs, music editor for Music Monthly, said, “What separates Captain Quint from the others are the songs – the original songs – by singer/guitarist Jim Bowley.”
In 2010, Jim co-wrote the instrumental track, “Cabana Breeze”, with steel drummer extraordinaire, John Patti – the song went on to enjoy strong airplay on Radio Margaritaville as the title track to Patti’s latest release.
Jim has studied songwriting with award-winning writer Jon Ims in Nashville, TN, and is a former member of the Baltimore Songwriters Association. He continues to hone his songwriting skills with his students as well as in his partnership with up and coming Pennsylvania songwriter, Brett Berwager.
