Sure, there are plenty of great guitarists out there, but most of them, quite honestly, are players, not teachers.
A quality guitar lesson is one in which YOU learn to play the guitar because your teacher was able to communicate good information, analyze your strengths and weaknesses, and coach you to meet YOUR musical goals.
Additionally, a quality guitar teacher will create a warm and friendly environment, and inspire you to greatness. In my guitar studio, you’ll dare to be great and have fun in the process!
My guitar lessons are focused on two things: strong fundamentals and your individual goals in music.
I require that all of my students gain some mastery of the fundamentals of guitar, no matter what style of music they may eventually prefer to play. This means that sound technique, a vocabulary of open-position and barre chords, a command of basic strumming patterns, the ability to read rhythms, and an understanding of basic music theory will be emphasized and reinforced on a regular basis.
Beyond the fundamentals, the lessons are essentially “student driven”. Since enthusiasm and desire are the personal traits most essential to guitar success, it is important that you are playing the music that makes you feel happy and motivated. Therefore, you should feel free to request songs or techniques that you want to learn.
As a 35-year student of the guitar, I’m fluent in styles as diverse as pop, rock, blues, jazz, heavy metal, country, folk, fingerstyle, funk/r&b, reggae – so most any request can be accommodated. However, if you wish to play proper classical guitar, I can recommend a more competent teacher for that style.
Finally, my students have full access to my vast library of books, CDs, transcriptions and the 7000 or so songs that currently populate my iPod!
I spent 4 years at Harford Community College teaching the packed Monday night Guitar I and II classes, as well as 5 years at the Maryland Conservatory of Music. At MCM, I not only gave private lessons but also founded the school’s first ever pop/rock guitar program, which included the Classic Rock Ensemble and the summer Rock Guitar Camp.
Currently, I teach private guitar lessons exclusively out of my thriving home studio in Bel Air, Maryland. I welcome students from 6th grade through adult, and love the challenge of getting adult beginners playing and having fun from the first lesson. My studio is currently comprised of approximately 50/50 teenagers to adults.
Unlike a lot of guitar instructors, I have a formal education in music. I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Towson University, where I studied under some of the most respected music educators in Maryland. I have also have 35 years of practical playing experience, of which 20+ years have been spent as a professional guitarist/vocalist.
In addition to private lessons, I love to train the next generation of musicians to perform in a band environment. I spent two years as musical director/manager of the teen rock band, Cryin’ Out Loud, which was comprised of some of my most accomplished students. COL performed regularly in Harford County at some of the most popular venues and events, often sharing the stage with adult professional bands.
Many of my current and former students can be found not only playing professionally in rock bands, but also jamming in high school jazz ensembles, performing in community theater pit bands or church worship groups, and pursuing music degrees at the college level, including the famed Berklee College of Music.
